Why Scholars Differ (Ikhtilāf)
The School of Scholars • Module 1 of 2
Legitimate difference of opinion (ikhtilāf) is a recognized and respected tradition in Islamic law. Scholars may arrive at different conclusions based on their interpretation of primary texts (Qur'an and Sunnah), their methodologies in jurisprudence (uṣūl al-fiqh), or their assessment of modern realities. This is a mercy and provides flexibility for the Ummah.
Scholars Say
"My opinion is correct with the possibility of being wrong, and the opinion of others is wrong with the possibility of being correct."
